Online tests and video interviews

A 60-minute workshop for a finance society, with a live challenge and practice in pairs

Before the session

  • A room with a screen and good wifi
  • Members with a phone or laptop and a browser
  • Every link tested on the room's wifi beforehand
  • Printed tally sheets and interviewer cards, if you want paper copies
  • One numerical question picked for the walkthrough
  • A second host to keep time

Running order

Times are from the start, so adjust them to fit your slot

  1. Welcome and aims

    0:00 · 5 min

    • Ask for a show of hands on who has an online test or video interview coming up
    • Explain the plan: what each stage is like, a live challenge, then practice in pairs

Host note: Keep it short and make it clear nobody has to share a score

  2. What the stages look like

    0:05 · 10 min

    • Numerical reasoning: questions on tables and charts against the clock, usually with a calculator
    • Verbal and logical reasoning: true, false or cannot say statements, and patterns in shapes or sequences
    • Situational judgement: workplace scenarios where you rate or rank possible actions
    • Game-based assessments: short games that look at things like attention, memory and appetite for risk
    • One-way video interviews: a question on screen, a short time to prepare and a recorded answer with nobody on the other end

Host note: Formats vary by firm and year, so encourage members to read every invite carefully

  3. Live challenge: speed maths

    0:15 · 10 min

    • Everyone opens speed maths on their phone and runs 50 questions in 5 minutes
    • Members write their score on the tally sheet if they want to
    • Ask two or three people what helped, such as rounding first or skipping and coming back

Host note: Scores stay on each phone, and nothing is uploaded or ranked on the site

  4. Numerical walkthrough

    0:25 · 10 min

    • Put one numerical practice question on the screen and give the room a minute
    • Talk it through: read the question first, find the right row or bar, estimate, then calculate
    • Point out the traps: units, percentages of the wrong total and figures in thousands

Host note: Pick a question in advance and check the worked solution before the session

  5. Video interview practice in pairs

    0:35 · 15 min

    • Pair people up and give each pair an interviewer card to ask from
    • One reads the question aloud, then the other gets 30 seconds to prepare and 90 seconds to answer
    • The listener gives one strength and one thing to try, then the pair swaps

Host note: A phone timer works, or members can use the recorder on their own device

  6. Plan and wrap-up

    0:50 · 10 min

    • Share a simple plan for the 72 hours after an invite arrives
    • Ask everyone to name one format they'll practise this week
    • Point members to the practice tools and the society's next event

Host note: Finish on time, because people remember a session that respected their evening
